Our Story

Twenty-seven women. One Cultured Pearl legacy.

In the fall of 1987, more than fifty accomplished women united to reclaim and retain sorors across North Alabama. After two years of dedication, twenty-seven of them — revered as the “Cultured Pearls” — were chartered as the Rho Chi Omega Chapter on July 29, 1989.

Today the chapter's signature initiatives, including the Angel Pageant and the Prince to King Mentoring Program, continue to empower youth across Madison and Morgan Counties, alongside more than $100,000 awarded in scholarships.

2026–2030 International Program Targets

Eight targets, one mission.

Service and sisterhood have been the foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® since 1908. Guided by the theme Championing Service. Empowering Sisterhood. Transforming the World, the 2026–2030 administration builds upon the Sorority’s distinguished legacy by mobilizing a sisterhood of more than 120,000 active members to lead boldly on the front lines of change, education, and advocacy.

Membership & Reactivation

Our sisterhood, and how to be part of it.

Nine Howard University students were led by Ethel Hedgemon (Lyle) into forming a sisterhood in 1908. Five years later, Nellie Quander and her gallant and visionary associates contributed the added dimension of an international organization and perpetual membership.
